Jadikan Light Painting “Opus Delits”

May 30, 2012 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Photographer Guilhem Nicolas, a.k.a. Jadikan-LP, has put out a beautiful book of more than 50 of his unpublished light painting works. The book is only available in French right now but it is worth picking up just for the images. I caught up with Jadikan to ask him a few questions about how the book project came to be…

LPP ∇ Can you tell me more about how the book came to be? I see that it is in a series with other artist as well, did the publisher approach you, did you go to them? Can you could give me some background of how it happened?

GN ∇ How the book came to be ?
Quite fast ! I met the publisher by coincidence last november and they were thinking to make an “Opus Délits” book with a light painter. They knew already about my lightpainting work and were pleased to met me, a meeting was planed the week after. My place is not far from the publisher, so we decided to work together hard and fast, enough to prepare the next “Opus Délit”! It will be the first book from this editor with lightpainting !

For french speaker, the text itself is really pertinent. Talking about the links from art and photography history to the dicipline of lightpainting with a street art axis (not written by me 😉 The art critic did a really good job !

LPP ∇ How many books will be printed, is it limited edition?
GN ∇ The print is actually 1500 pieces, but only limited by the number of people who want one.
To buy it, you can
– go in France to find one in bookshop
– or order it online
http://www.criteres-editions.com/index.php/opusdelits/19343-jadikan
(a..z.n do the job too)
for special request, you can contact me.

LPP ∇ How did you select the images to go into the book? Are the images a collection of your work from years past or all new images?
GN ∇ The photography selection was not easy to do but there was a main line to follow: “Street Art”.
Part of my works are really typed to this direction by the location or the energy of the movement with the light, we went this way.

Since I work hard on lightpainting, I was used to keep some of my best photographies unpublished, waiting for a real occasion to show them.
This publication is the occasion : a 55 photographies concentrate of Jadikan LP production The oldest one is from 2007, a composition with 2 trompetist stencil sprayed by
myself… and the last photography of the book is from early 2012, the first one of an upcoming series !

LPP ∇ What do you think of light painting today as compared to 3 years ago?
GN ∇ Since 3 years, there are still a lot of evolution in tools and possibility, in my opinion, du to the increasing number of creative people involved in this movement.
The “light painting” is starting to be known by the public: advertisings, event, school animation …

There are also many more online resources for those who want to know more about the discipline or want to give a try (LPP is a reference !)

The feeling of doing light painting will remain the same forever with your flash, torches, and your camera in dark areas.

LPP ∇ Congratulations on the book it is beautifully done! Check out a few of Jadikan’s new works below and for more information check out his full Light Painting Photography profile HERE.

Light Painted Night Photography; New e-book from Troy Paiva and Interview

May 15, 2012 by Jason D. Page

Urban explorer, light painter, and night photography pioneer Troy Paiva has released a new light painting photography tell all book that breaks down 44 of his incredible images.

“All the secrets of his working process, never revealed before; from light settings and gel types, to white-balance methodology and post-production techniques are revealed. Each of the 44 images gets the full treatment; not only full explanations of his lighting and exposure methodology, but also anecdotes on compositional strategy, waiting for the decisive moment and making the best of difficult working situations.

I caught up with Troy and asked him a few questions about what we will find in this new book and what he thinks of light painting photography today.

LPP ∇ First Troy I want to say congratulations on the release of your new book! This makes number 3, do you ever get any sleep!

TP ∇ Only in my coffin during the day.

LPP ∇ Can you tell me a little bit about the book, what will the readers find inside? From the description it looks like this one is more of a “How To”?

TP ∇ Yes, this book is a pure “How To” piece. After teaching workshops for the past 4 years I’d amassed a huge stockpile of notes and info. People always seem to be most curious about how I actually do this work, so I put the book together over the last year using my teaching aids. It’s over 80 pages and 20,000 words. Much more writing than in any of my previous books, but the in-depth deconstruction of 44 full size, zoomable images–several of which have never appeared online before–make this my most informative book for other photographers.

LPP ∇ Why did you choose to publish a “How To” light painting book? Its awesome for the rest of us but what made you want to give away your specific techniques? I read that you are even giving away exact gel colors used to create certain images?

TP ∇ Why not? None of this is a state secret or anything. There’s plenty of people out there figuring out aspects of it on their own, the same way I did it, anyway. And plenty of others over-complicating the process too. I still run into people that think I use light stands and umbrellas and stuff, so I wanted to dispel all the myths and show just how DIY and downright easy these effects are to achieve with just a few dollars worth of gear.

LPP ∇ Besides hitting the bestseller list and the fortune and fame that goes with that, what is your hope for this book?

TP ∇ That it prompts thousands of people around the world to go out every full moon and use these techniques. Looking back 10 years ago, there were only a handful of serious night shooters and light painters on the planet . . . it blows my mind how far it’s come, but also, how much further it can still go.

LPP ∇ Your light painting photography has inspired countless photographers, Nocturne being one of the more notable, after people get their hands on your light painting cookbook I’m sure you will see many more images inspired by your work! How does it feel to see your influence in other people’s work?

TP ∇ It’s a thrill. I stood on the shoulders of some great photographers to get to this point, it’s an exceptional experience to see others standing on mine and reaching even further.

LPP ∇ What do you think of the present state of light painting photography.

TP ∇ I’m amazed by it. How far things have come, just in the last 5 years, it’s nothing short of astonishing. Now that you can chimp the shot before you ever pick up the tripod, it’s become very easy. There’s really no excuse to not reshoot it until you get it perfect.

LPP ∇ Where do you think light painting photography going?

TP ∇ LP is perceived as this new thing, but the reality is that photographers have used added light since the very beginning. With modern gear it’s just become much simpler, more fool-proof, so the numbers of people who experiment with it continue to escalate. The sky’s the limit.

LPP ∇ Where can we get the book? Are there hard copies available or only the E-book version?

TP ∇ It’s only an e-book at this point. Order it for readers, tablets and computers here:

http://www.flatbooks.com/light-painted-night-photography/

LPP ∇ Not only are you releasing your specific techniques to the world in this new book but you also hold light painting workshops where photographers or anyone wanting to learn your technique can come spend a few days with you, when is your next workshop?

TP ∇ Yeah, I hold workshops with night photographer and Lightroom guru Joe Reifer in a high desert junkyard north of Los Angeles. It’s filled with movie prop vehicles, derelict garages and a full blown recycling facility. I rent the place for 3 nights and we really get to work. With the classroom stuff during the day and shooting until 2 each night, it’s very immersive. Hardcore. The next one is in late September. We’ll open registration for that in June. People should get on my mailing list for priority registration. All the info is here:

http://lostamerica.com/night-photography-workshop/

LPP ∇ Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions Troy I wish you much continued success!

Lightplot, 3D Light Painting Robotics

May 15, 2012 by Jason D. Page

Lightplot is a robotic 3D light painting system created by Ben Cowell-Thomas of ReThinkFX. Animation is exported from 3DS Max, and imported into the Lightplot software which then drives a robotic arm to draw the models in the air. The software also controls a DSLR camera to take long exposure photographs of each frame of animation. Would love to see what Lichtfaktor could do with this!

April Light Painting Contest Winner

May 4, 2012 by Jason D. Page

And the winner is…… Nikita Mikheev for this super rad shot of the Light Painting Photography logo. This was a VERY difficult contest to select a winner, all three of the judges voted for different images. We had to bring in an alternate judge to make the final selection. The top three images were really incredible and you can tell each light painter worked hard to create a great shot, but only one can win! Nikita will receive a LPP prize pack from the great flashlight company on the Coast!

LIGHT PAINT LIVE!

May 2, 2012 by Jason D. Page

The live light painting game just changed. I have known about the development of this for sometime now and had the hardest time keeping my mouth shut but now I can tell the world….. We have all seen the live light painting videos and we sit back and say damn I wish I was smarter, or if only I knew a computer genius who could make me something so I could do that. Well, well, well, enter Mr. Josh Beckwith, a computer genius at Posit Labs who has a passion for light painting photography. Josh with some help from light painting photographer Joerg Miedza (Half of the former LAPP-PRO) has created Light Paint Live, a very easy to use live light painting program that can give you some pretty awesome results.

Light Paint Live has a multitude of controls that allows you to fine tune your desired look and feel of the light. The possibilities for this software are really endless! You could create your own light painting performance act and head to broadway or simply use it as a realtime display for where you are when creating your own light painting masterpiece.

Images above are screen shots by Joerg Miedza.

There are 3 Different Versions of the software available; LPL Instant, LPL Heavy, and LPL Android. Josh also has an iOS version in the works as well as a few more tricks up his sleeve for the future. You can try the LPL Instant for free, the LPL Heavy Version with all the manual controls will cost you 5 Bucks, but it will be the best 5 dollars you have ever spent on any light painting tool.

Check out LightPaintLive.com and get it NOW.

– A lot of running around with lights.
– Also combining manual and pulsing strobe flash.
