Light Painting Contest Winner, Jan 2014

February 4, 2014 by Jason D. Page

January Light Painting Contest 03
And the winner is… the duo of Heinz-Joerg & Garry Krätz a.k.a. Electrical Movements in the Dark (EMD) for this fantastic light painting.

EMD have been creating their light painting work since 2010 and their work is inspired by the early work of LAPP-Pro and LightArt Photography Master JanLeonardo. For this winning image they left the shutter open for a total of 368 seconds using the technique of capping the lens several times.

Here’s how it happened:

We had the idea to create a fountain made with pyrotechnique. The fireworks should fall down like a little waterfall, combined with a red laser light.

We used a little warehouse for the shooting. In the middle we placed a little tripod with an axis on it. A big red laserpointer (1.5 Watt!) inside a microphone clamp was fitted on the axis with a counterweight on the opposite side.

The laser pointer can be seen here:
https://www.1a-shops.eu/cgi-bin/shopserver/shops/s012216/index.cgi?aktion=um&ps=252931&subid=252931

So we put an add-on on the laserpointer to create the lines on the floor and the wall. It took more than half an hour to get the right position for camera and laser tripod. We always work with an iPad and a CamRanger (http://camranger.com). CamRanger is a great tool for astrophotography, star trails and light painting.

On the axis there was also a stick (1.5 m) with pyro material at the end (and a counterweight on the other side of course). So it was easy to spin it around slowly but exactly.

We made some test shots (white balance, aperture, etc.) to find out the best settings – and how long we have to spin the red laser.

After that, we started spinning the laser for about two minutes, then we covered the lens. I switched out the laser and light on the pyro on the stick. The stick was spinning very slow so we got the effect that the lights fall down towards the ground – like a waterfall. The pyro was burning for about 15 seconds, then we covered the lens again. A few seconds later the pyro went out. So I stopped the spinning, light on the single pyro in the middle, and started again spinning very slowly. We uncovered again the lens for a few seconds, then we stopped.

We made this procedure four or five times again to get the best result. This picture was taken with my Canon EOS 7D using the EF-S 10-22mm lens with 13mm, 368 sec., ISO 100 and f/25.

Of course we wore protection glasses when using the laser! And a fire extinguisher was standing nearby…

July Light Painting Contest Winner

August 5, 2013 by Jason D. Page

July 2013 Light Painting Contest 11

And the winner is… Sean Liew for this spectacular still life light painting!

To create this winning image Sean left his shutter open for 223 second, and shot aperture ƒ/8, ISO200,  on a Nikon D300.

A little more about how this light painting was created;
“The photo was taken a few weeks before I moved into my new apartment when I had an empty living room to mess about with light painting.

There were some left over renovation materials lying around, so the textured base you see in the pix was actually a piece of decorative finishing for the TV cabinet. I thought the glossy pattern would be interesting, and pair it with a spray can from the trash bin. I’d only brought a few of my LP tools at the time and the EL wires were new to me back then so I experimented with those on a couple of shots before ending up with the one I submitted. With one finger holding the tip of the EL wire and placing the tip behind the nozzle, the other end of the wire was waved around for quite a bit. Each color was given a ‘slice’ of the color pie while there’s some overlapping in between them. The dots came from a modified little LED white bulb (see picture below) that I usually use to write when doing LP. Did some quick taps around the areas where the EL wires painted, varying the distance with each click to give them a sense of depth with different dot sizes. Lastly, I use that same ‘pen’ tool to shine from the back of the can to highlight the textured base and create an outline around the can.”

April Light Painting Contest Winner

May 8, 2013 by Jason D. Page

And the winner is…..

April Contest 11

Sascha Pseiner for the above light painting image.

Here is Sascha’s description of how the image was created:

For three years I make light art performance photography now. And the time has come where I work more and more with human models and not only with abandoned places. I love to spend hours outside at night and create new forms of light again.

I work a lot with led lenser and color films and also with experimental pyrotechnics.

For this image I worked with a LED lamp mounted on a round wooden pole with a red colored foil on and two studio flashes.

You can find me on facebook www.facebook.com/nichtspunkt and on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/sascha_pseiner/

And the winner is…..

February Light Painting Contest 29

Oliver Kretschmann for the above kinetic light painting image.

Here is Olivers description of how the image was created:

My entry for the february contest has been taken from the series “Walk in the light park”. I captured a row ofpark lanterns in my hometown Emmerich (Germany). I used the zoomlens and a strict rectangular movement of the camera to create this spatial-architectural illusion. The series contains nearly 40 photos in which I try to explore many different variantions of this setting and theme.

You can find a selection of the series and much more on my flickr-site: www.flickr.com/photos/kreto170

Click the link the images in this series are pretty awesome.

LPP would like to say a special THANK YOU to all the students that participated in this months contest!

February Light Painting Photography Contest Winner

March 4, 2012 by Jason D. Page

And the winner isssss……

Clay Howard Smith for this beautiful light painting portrait. There were several really good images entered and it was very difficult to select a winner. The 3 images that had the most reader votes were 20, 48, and 49. Dean Chamberlain, Aurora Crowley, Nocturne, Myself, and last months winner Aaron Ploog all made the final decision and the final vote was four for #20 and one for #49. Thanks to all who entered click here to check out the new contest and keep on reading to find out what Clay had to say about his winning shot!

“This image was a bit of a nightmare to produce. I’ve been using fiber bundles in a lot of photographs lately thanks to the inspiring images of Aurora Crowley and Patrick Rochon. The exposure involves taking the fiber bundles, exposing them, and then highlighting the form underneath with a smaller torch. The real trick is not to overexpose the photograph, which was definitely frustrating at times. My website is www.clayhowardsmith.com“
