Light Painting Contest Winner, January 2016

February 3, 2016 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Contest 21 january 2016

And the winner for the January 2016 Light Painting Contest Themed “Flowers” is… Marcel Fuhrmann and his light painting group Aurora Movement from Berlin who worked together to create the winning image entitled “Valentine”! Aurora Movement have only been light painting for one year they said they started with just a candle and now its a big part of their lives. They used many different tools to create this impressive Light Painting all in a single exposure. The tools Aurora Movements used including El-Wire, a Red Laser Pen, Blinky Tape, a Butterfly Stencil, a Flashlight and lots of fog.

Aurora Movement said this about the shot “The exposure time was 279 seconds with ISO 100 and variable aperture. We started with the butterfly stencil mounted on a P7 QC LED flashlight so that our model Xenija didn’t have to hold still for the whole time. Next Xenija positioned herself in front of the rotating disc with a programmable LED stripe by Blinky Labs attached to it. The flower bitmap was created in ‘Pattern Paint’. We used EL-Wire for the fog-like look above ground but used artifical fog for the entire room to emphasize the red laser beams. After practicing the choreography it was pretty easy to get the picture. The hardest part was for Xenija, because she had to hold still for almost three minutes.”

Light Painting Contest Winner, November 2015

December 3, 2015 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Contest 10 November 2015

And the winner for the November 2015 Light Painting Contest Themed “Portrait” is… Vincent Delesvaux, a.k.a. Diliz This beautiful Light Painting Photograph was created at F-5.0, ISO 100, during a 116 second exposure.

Vincent said this about the image:
“I remember now” has been made at one oclock in my home in 2012, with my ex girlfriend Cosima that I’ve met in Dharamsala, India.

We’ve been using an African mask, a scarf, électroluminescent wire and a little bit of optic fiber and the spotlight shifter 1.0 that I’ve diffused to be used at f/5.

I start to paint the back of Cosima with EL wire taking it with two hands in every end to get a better control of the shapes and a little bit of optic fiber… Then I used the spotlight shifter diffused to paint the right side of the mask and the bottom and both hands close to the face, taking care of not putting light on the left side to allow space for the second cycle and the other half face of the model. After that she took the mask off, join her hands and I light painted them and the left side of her face.

That’s it. Pretty easy!”

I don’t know about “easy” but it sure is incredible! For this fabulous creation Vincent will receive a LPP prize pack filled with treasures from our sponsors below. Make sure to check out more of Vincent’s Light Painting work on his website www.diliz-light.com and his Facebook Page HERE!

Light Painting Contest Winner, September 2015

October 2, 2015 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Contest 06 Sept 2015

And the winner for the September 2015 Light Painting Contest Themed “Double Exposure in a Single Exposure” light painting is… Santiago Salinas de la Vega for above image titled “Flower Of Life”. This incredible light painting was created in one single 192 second exposure shot at F22 and ISO 200.

Santiago said this about creating the winning Image, “I took this photo from the Hans-Wilsdorf bridge in the city of Geneva last August. One afternoon I was looking for places to shoot and after a long walk I came across this bridge and as I saw it I liked it because of the various shapes. Returning at night I liked even more because of its lighting. The red, orange and blue, was amazing!

I framed the image from outside the bridge and using my electronic rotator camera devise, I started to rotate the camera every 45 degrees (covering and uncovering the lens in each rotation, to create the image) I rotated the camera 8 times and created the image in one single exposure. During each lens cap, I estimated 2 seconds of exposure before I capped the lens again to prevent overexposure.”

To check out more of Santiago’s Light Painting work check out his Flickr and Facebook pages! For this wonderful creation Santiago will receive a LPP prize pack filled with treasures from our sponsors below.

Light Painting Contest Winner, April 2015

May 2, 2015 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Contest 02 April 2015
And the winner for the April 2015 Light Painting Contest Themed ““Kinetic” light painting is… Jannis Sidiropoulos for above image titled “Ascending and Descending”. This was another very difficult contest to judge! There was some incredible work to choose from, but in the end the judges were able to come up with a winner and it is a great image indeed.

Gear and settings for this light painting were:
Canon 60D with the EF-S17-85mm lens (17mm)
F18
ISO 100
49 Second Exposure

Jannis said this about creating the winning shot:
“This image was created one raining March night in my living room while experimenting with zoom and pan/tilt. I was trying to rotate the camera holding it by hand, but I didn’t like the results so then I started playing around with more simple moves and zoom. The results got more interesting and after some more experimenting I got this one. The light sources are a hula hoop with white xmas lights and some fading LED’s I took out of a toy. 🙂 I guess sometimes the lack of proper equipment can drive you to be more creative in a way..”

This is a very true statement and goes to show you don’t need to have the most expensive complex gear to make fantastic work.

Light Painting Contest Winner, Dec 2014

January 3, 2015 by Jason D. Page

December 2014 Light Painting Contest 14

And the winner is… Jordan Kjome for this fiery masterpiece titled “Forging the Stars”. This image was one hell of a long exposure at a whopping 1,836 seconds!

Thank you to this months judge’s Denis Smith and Jelle Schuurman.
Denis said “There were some stunning light painting images entered into the Orb competition this month. Light painting has progressed so far since I first Created the Ball of Light. It fills me with joy. The three finalists were beautiful. To me a great photograph is one that creates an emotional reaction inside me. Striving for technical perfection is secondary. Focusing on the art, rather than the pixels, allows us to become free to go hard and create magic. And in all of the images entered I see that, and feel it.

In the three final images we have three very different styles of image. All are beautiful but for me number 14 stands out. I keep going back to have another look. Firstly because it fills me with a feeling of wonder and awe, then I need to figure out how? Congratulations, this is a truly stunning light painting image!”

Here is some more about the image from Jordan:
“Forging the Stars” is one of my favorite light paintings, and certainly one of my most exhausting and longest exposed photographs. It is a 1,836 second (over 30 minutes), single exposure photograph with no post processing. The structure is a brick kiln in Decorah, Iowa called “Schulze Brick Kiln”. There were unique challenges to this shot that required some problem solving before I could begin light painting. About fifty feet to the rear right of the shot is a tungsten street light mounted to a building. This meant that I could only do very short exposures before the photograph would over expose. I did not have access to turning this light off, so my only option was to eclipse the light. I used a thirty foot long, extendable fiberglass pole with a plastic trashcan lid taped to the end to eclipse the light. Three heavy weights, along with steel cables, allowed me to triangulate the pole so that it would not sway in the wind and come into contact with the power lines. Needless to say it worked, but I won’t risk the dangers again next time.

The faux fire effect was light painted using a single LED and red translucent plastic. The “star” at the center of the photograph was light painted with my tool tied to a string, and that string was tied to the top of a homemade stand, similar to a microphone stand. The string enabled me to create a perfect sphere, and about twenty minutes of the exposure was spent filling in the sphere with light. The trick for a realistic fire effect lies in the wrist. Be as random in movement as possible, and move at an absolute snail’s pace. This is where your spatial memory comes into play. It is very easy to miss a spot when you are filling in a sphere that has twenty square feet of surface area, and you are moving one millimeter at a time for twenty minutes. Fortunately, the spots that I missed worked to my advantage as sunspots.

The four portal doors were light painted using the same light tool, only disconnected from the string and stand. Again, I moved at a snail’s pace while I covered every millimeter of the face of the doors, and then I added quick wisps of light to make it appear as though the fire is blowing out those doors.

Thirty minutes of moving your arm/wrist as quick and random as you possibly can will result in muscle fatigue- especially when you do take, after take, after take. Physically turning the car’s ignition key to head home was a funny challenge in itself.”

We are glad Jordan didn’t cause any blackouts and was able to get home safe and sound to upload

Light Painting Contest Winner, Oct 2014

November 3, 2014 by Jason D. Page

October 2014 Light Painting Contest 06
And the winner is…. Jelle Schuurmans for this Futuristic Bionic Image! Here is a little more about how it was created.

Jelle said “I made this shot after a night of experimenting at home because of bad weather outside. I had the “Bionic” idea in my head for a while after seeing some guys PCB (Printed Circuit Board) pattern arm tattoo. So I started by making a PCB light stencil. Since we don’t have any of those nice and big storm drain tubes here in the Netherlands I wanted to try and create a similar “tube” effect, so in this case I ended up using a big metal bin. The end result was not what I had in mind, the bin is not nearly large enough to get a real tube effect, so I though maybe I could combine the PCB hand with this metal bin effect.
I placed my camera inside the metal bin, held my hand in front of the opening and used a flash to light up my hand. Now I took the stencil box and flashed the PCB pattern in the opening. All done during one long exposure in the dark living room.”

August 2014 Light Painting Contest Winner

September 3, 2014 by Jason D. Page

August 2014 Light Painting Photography Contest 10
and the winner for the August 2014 Light Painting contest is… Pala Teth for this explosive fireworks light painting! To create the winning image Pala went deep into the ruins of a middle-age castle in Belgium to try a new fireworks tool he bought, a roman candle set with 7 tubes that shoots 140 roman candle shots in 30 sec!

Pala said “My friend Bruno agreed to be the model, so he put a hoddie on and he was standing in the middle of the ruins. I was just behind him with the fireworks and I’ve turned the roman candles in all directions to create this effect. The idea was to put the model in the center of a sort of a giant “fireworks star”. The roman candle balls were ejected through the walls and the floor and, of course, they made ricochets and went back close to us. “Don’t do this at home !” seems a good advice. :)”

For this winning image Pala will receive a LPP prize pack filled with treasures from our sponsors COAST Flashlights, Neon Flexible, and LED Flexible!

May 2014 Light Painting Contest Winner

June 4, 2014 by Jason D. Page

May 2014 Light Painting Contest 10

Damnnnnn….. this was a difficult contest to judge! There were SO MANY good images this month we had to pull together a panel of five judges to make a final decision. After some heated debate we finally came to a consensus and the winner is… Jester Lights for this stunner of an Interdimensional light painting portrait! Funny thing about this image is it came together on the fly while Jester was actually working on a different idea all together. Here is a little background on this image from the man himself:

“I was working on my kaleidoscope-double exposure with my friend but got confronted with some issues. After several tries I decided to test a little diffuser made of little “verrines” with clear tape on my Coast TX10 I had built the afternoon before. It was the perfect fit for this light, it gives three more colors to the 4 already available. I told my freind to take a pose “as if he was stepping through an inter dimensional portal”. At first I used the white leds to light him expect his left leg then I put the diffuser on the light. I began with the dark blue, drawing a large circle behind him but in front of his left leg, then I had the green light, but together with the blue led on, it creates a light blue I really really like. Then I began drawing  smaller circles, but with little waves in them and pointing the light  toward and backward the objective. As I drew the smallest circles, I turned the white leds in the back of my friend in order to create a “bright spot” behind him, as if coming through a light tunnel. I liked his jacket and hood, it reminded me of a “Doctor Who-esque” figure.

March 2014 Light Painting Contest 08

And the winner is… Marisa Sheilds for the above image “Along the Lane”. Marisa created the image in a relatively short 30 second exposure using “glow sticks on string to swing them in a clockwise and counterclockwise motion, each rotation I gave the strong less slack until it had none and then released it back out, traveled farther down the lane and repeated for the total 3 circles.”

For this single line light painting Marisa will receive a LPP prize pack filled with treasures from our sponsors COAST Flashlights, Neon Flexible, and LED Flexible!
