Understanding Color Temperature

February 23, 2011 by Jason D. Page

We all know how easy it is to tweak the hues of a photo in post production software like the dreaded photo@#!%, a word we do not speak here at light painting photography, but do you understand what the hell you are actually doing when you change the color? Well friends what you are doing is changing the temperature of the image. All light color is measured in degrees Kelvin, named after engineer and physicist William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin. We could get into his scientific theory but I would have to pretend to understand it which I don’t. Basically in the world of light painting photography all you need to know is that the lower the Kelvin temperature the “warmer” or more yellow the light appears and the higher Kelvin temperature the  “cooler” or more blue the light will appear. In the next post I’m going to get into white balance, why color temperature matters, and how to get some cool effects by tweaking the white balance of your camera in turn changing the color temperature of your image and keeping your light painting images SOOC (Straight out of Camera). Check the chart below.

Copying Other Peoples Work

February 15, 2011 by Jason D. Page

I have recently been informed of a website that has copied and pasted what has taken me months of work to compile with out giving any credit or a link back to the site. I am building this website for the promotion of light painting photography and the artist involved in the movement as well as a resource for light painters and those who are interested in our art form. We are all inspired by the work of other light painters, other writers, other photographers, and other artist in general. I don’t agree with Pablo Picasso when he said “Good artist copy, Great artist steal”. The point is….. PLEASE spread the word about light painting photography and feel free to use anything on this site, copy and paste it if you want, just give credit where credit is due! If you use photos from an artist give the artist credit and a link back to their website. If you copy and paste the entire history of light painting page to create a page on your own website be sure to say where you got it from! Light painting photography has a very close community, we know who is putting in the work and who is not.

Kaki King – “Pull Me Out Alive” Music Video

February 11, 2011 by Jason D. Page

This is an older light painting video but a damn good one. Kaki King’s “Pull Me Out Alive” music video was shot on some very cold nights in New York City back in 2008. The final video is comprised of over 2700 individual light painting photographs. The crew began shooting around 6 P.M. as soon as the sun went down and worked for several nights until 6 in the morning. The nights were so cold that a hot cup of coffee would freeze in 5 minutes if left out in the elements. The making of this light painting video was put together nicely check them both out below.

The Lights We Use

February 3, 2011 by Jason D. Page

This is a new light painting video tutorial by Trevor Williams and Fiz-iks about the lights used to create their magic. I really like the way these light painting tutorials are put together, they are informative and entertaining at the same time. Trevor has a whole series of these videos planned so stay tuned for more as they become available! View the first video in the series HERE.

Here is a brief run down of the type of lights we use for light painting. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments. Read about our gear on our homepage at http://www.fiz-iks.com/gear

Nowhere Near Here, Light Painting

January 30, 2011 by Jason D. Page

If life is a catwalk, run like a dog.

‘Nowhere Near Here’ is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010.

With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Through the course of shooting ‘Nowhere Near Here’, I have dealt with curious drunks, a dog almost peeing on the camera (the irony is not lost on me, haha), the endlessly suspicious police and even someone nearly running off with a tripod.

This is street art, this is life and thank you for watching.

…for those of you that may be interested in prints, a selection of film stills from ‘Nowhere Near Here’ are currently available at pahnl.co.uk/store.php
