Light Painting Photography Contest Winner, December 2016

January 6, 2017 by Jason D. Page

And the winner for the December 2016 Light Painting Photography Contest themed “Light Man” is… The incredibly talented group of 4 Light Painting Artist; Luis Kuziw, Leonardo López, Pablo Mielniczuk, and Pablo Piloni who collectively go by the name Elemental Light!

Elemental Light said this about the development of the winning image:

The development of this photograph came up from a phrase: “Even if we are opposites it doesn’t mean that we can‘t complement each other.”
From this idea, we thought different possibilities to show this complement using the light and the technics that we already knew from light painting.
Our first idea included three light man and three mandalas/flowers, which two of those united. From this idea, made a sketch to agree with the photograph.

We went out shooting one night, with the help of 3 models, in an abandoned place. After several attempts we got the photo.

But when we returned home and saw it on the computer screen we realized that the result did not quite convinced us, so then we decided to change the type of scenario by one that refers more to nature and eliminate the lonely light man.
It took us several tries but we got the photo we wanted.

To perform the flower/mandala form, we developed an tool made out of bicycle parts, which we called “Mandala Maker”

By placing lights on it, we can generate different patterns.

The Mandala Maker has already given us some good results in other works too.

With the help of two models that posed steady, we drew their shape using the “Freehand RGB Pencil” from “Herramientas lightpainting”, in a line that would end in the location of the led light of its corresponding color in the mandala maker.
With a remote control we change the Freehand color and draw the other light man, we used complementary colors to express the idea.

Then we spin the Mandala Maker to form the flower/mandala shape … Once this was done, we removed the mandala maker and the models to illuminate the background.

Exif data: f/7.1 – 559s – ISO 100

Light Painting Photography Contest Winner, October 2016

November 2, 2016 by Jason D. Page

light-painting-contest-21-october-2016
And the winner for the October 2016 Light Painting Photography Contest themed “Light Writing” is… Olivier Fay for this excellent Light Painting with a simple and powerful message.

This winning image took three nights to create, with the help of Olivier’s girlfriend who was the very patient model in a tunnel along the Gardon river near the village of Comps in France.

How it was created:
Settings:
ISO 100, F8, and a total single exposure time of 947 seconds.

Olivier said “First, I illuminated the background. I used a light tube with plastic bags to put light behind the model and I also used a hot-white torchlight.”

“For the text I created it with a little green pencil LED light. The most difficult part was to write in the axis of the camera. To write the text in a legible way, it was necessary to space the letters in the background much more than those in foreground.”

“In order to keep the line, I used fishing line to guide the hand. Another challenge was to write backwards (left side). Then, I illuminated the walls and the water (a little in the front) with a hot-white torch.”

“Finally, I illuminated with a hot-white torch the tree branch I had put above the tunnel. You can see in the image that there was wind.”

About the text of the photo:
“Light painting is an incredible way to create images, I did not want to write something in connection with light. Everybody knows that it is great to play with light! Every light painter knows that light painting is fun.”

“I choose to write “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” because it’s a reality and I think the world needs to remember it!”

Light Painting Photography Contest Winner, July 2016

August 4, 2016 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Contest 14 July 2016
And the winner for the March 2016 Light Painting Photography Contest is… Riders of Light for the excellent image above! This light painting is part of a series of creative images inspired by the character from the The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess video game.

To create the winning image Riders Of Light worked with cosplay model Ishere Lartnec and traveled to the ruins of Caudilla in the province of Toledo (Spain) for the perfect backdrop. The image was created using a Canon 6D, shot at F8, ISO 100, and an exposure time of 58 seconds. The Riders of Light said that they were also lucky “that some clouds accompanied us and helped compose our scene.”

Along with that little bit of luck I think it also took vision, and some real skill to pull off this wonderful image. Check out some of the other images from the series below and to see more work from the Riders Of Light check out their website HERE.

Light Painting Photography Contest Winner, May 2016

Light Painting Contest 03 May 2016

And the winner for the March 2016 Light Painting Photography Contest is… Christina Salinas! Christina created the super cool winning image ⇧ above ⇧ using light stencils and a multitude of different light painting tools all in a single 196 second exposure. Christina is a Digital Photography teacher in northern California who loves to share light painting with her student, she will be donating all the new gear she receives in her prize package to her school and students! Here are all the steps Christina took to create the winning image:

Step #1: I created a (2) 8.5 x 11 black and white stencils with the Logo design (in yellow) & the Array in Red/orange
Step #2: I then made a light tight, exposure box to hold the stencil.
Step #3: I printed two copies of each stencil, placing them into a sheet protector and placing them on the exposure box, using straight pens to hold in place.
Step #4: Camera settings were set to ISO 100, F 14, Bulb Mode
Step #5: I used a cannon Speedlite flash and covered it with a yellow gel setting it to Manual, full power.
Step #6: I then locked my shutter with a cable release and exposed the Logo stencil using the flash &, and then switched the stencil to the array stencil. For this stencil, I used the Light Painting Brushes red & orange hooded gels exposing the edge of the array with red and orange in the middle.
Step #7: I then used the Godspeed lite blade along the edges of the stencil, moving every few inches around the stencil design.
Step #8: To finish the exposure, I raw processed the image and cropped to an 8×10.
This exposure lasted for 196 seconds.

Light Painting Contest Winner, March 2016

April 4, 2016 by Jason D. Page

Birth of the Universe_Olaf Schieche
And the winner for the March 2016 Light Painting Contest Themed “Urbex” is… Olaf Schieche and Jenja Ospanov who worked together to create the winning image entitled “Birth of The Universe”!

Olaf said this about the light painting “Birth of The Universe was created by my partner Jenja Ospanov and me in an abandoned Soviet hangar in eastern Germany. This is one of the few images that we planned thoroughly before we even stepped into the building. The photograph is showing both chaos and order, and from those everything is born.

First, the orb in the center of the image was created and the circles around it. The latter were painted with a LED poi (blinking mode) on a spinning construction. For the green lines we used cold light cathodes and, for orientation, the lines that were still on the ground, since that hall used to be a gymnasium. In the end, we used a LED Lenser X21 to shine into the hall from behind the windows.”

Light Painting Contest Winner, January 2016

February 3, 2016 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Contest 21 january 2016

And the winner for the January 2016 Light Painting Contest Themed “Flowers” is… Marcel Fuhrmann and his light painting group Aurora Movement from Berlin who worked together to create the winning image entitled “Valentine”! Aurora Movement have only been light painting for one year they said they started with just a candle and now its a big part of their lives. They used many different tools to create this impressive Light Painting all in a single exposure. The tools Aurora Movements used including El-Wire, a Red Laser Pen, Blinky Tape, a Butterfly Stencil, a Flashlight and lots of fog.

Aurora Movement said this about the shot “The exposure time was 279 seconds with ISO 100 and variable aperture. We started with the butterfly stencil mounted on a P7 QC LED flashlight so that our model Xenija didn’t have to hold still for the whole time. Next Xenija positioned herself in front of the rotating disc with a programmable LED stripe by Blinky Labs attached to it. The flower bitmap was created in ‘Pattern Paint’. We used EL-Wire for the fog-like look above ground but used artifical fog for the entire room to emphasize the red laser beams. After practicing the choreography it was pretty easy to get the picture. The hardest part was for Xenija, because she had to hold still for almost three minutes.”
