Dreamy Fiber Optic Light Painting Portrait Tutorial

Dreamy Fiber Optic Light Painting Portrait Tutorial

In this quick Light Painting tutorial, you will learn how this soft, glowing portrait was created using fiber optic light, haze, strobe lighting, and a halo-style foreground effect.

This image combines long exposure Light Painting with portrait lighting to create a dreamy atmosphere around the subject. The White Fiber Optic adds delicate strands of light, while the haze helps the light become visible in the space around the model.

What Makes This Image Work

The look of this Light Painting portrait comes from combining several different elements in one exposure. The fiber optic creates the fine glowing texture near the subject’s hand. The halo filter produces the large circular ring of light around the portrait. The aerosol haze fills the space with atmosphere, helping the light feel soft, visible, and dimensional.

Instead of simply lighting the subject, this technique uses light as part of the composition. The movement of light becomes a visual element inside the portrait.

Tools Used

  • White Fiber Optic Light Painting Brush
  • Universal Connector
  • Flashlight
  • Halo Filter
  • Atmosphere Aerosol Spray
  • 2 Neewer strobes

Technique Breakdown

For this image, the subject was posed inside a hazy environment created with Atmosphere Aerosol Spray. Strobes were used to light and freeze the subject, while the long exposure allowed the fiber optic light movement to record in the frame.

The White Fiber Optic Light Painting Brush was moved near the hand to create the soft, flowing lines of light. The halo effect was created in front of the lens to frame the subject and add a glowing circular element around the portrait.

Why Haze Helps in Light Painting Portraits

Haze gives light something to interact with. Without atmosphere in the air, many beams and glowing effects can appear less visible. By adding a controlled amount of haze, the light becomes softer and more dimensional, which is especially useful for dreamy portrait work.

About Light Painting Portrait Photography

Light Painting is the intentional movement of light through space over time, captured with a long exposure photograph. In portrait work, this allows the artist to combine stillness, movement, illumination, and atmosphere into a single image.

Fiber optics are especially useful for portraits because they can create soft, organic textures without overpowering the subject. They are great for creating glowing details, abstract energy, angelic effects, and dreamlike movement around the body.

Light Painting Brushes – 10 Year Anniversary Video

Light Painting Brushes turned 10 years old on October 1, 2024, and to celebrate, Jason Rinehart surprised me with this video where he reached out to people in our Light Painting Community to share a bit about how our work and LPB has impacted them.

Thank you to Rinehart for putting this together — it feels so good to hear the reach our work and LPB has had over the last decade in this video.

A very special thank you to Carolina Ortiz Martinez, Johnny Griffin, and Jason Rinehart — these special humans are the glue that makes LPB what it is.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who took the time to send Rinehart a video for this. Thank you:
Katrina Brown, Rob D’Angelo, Jess Cruger, Laura DelPrato, Ruben Martinez, Duncan MacKay, Russell Klimas, Dmitrij Dimek, Christina Marie, Stephen Knight, Chris Bauer, Kashishimoto Howard, Ian Greenwood, Andrea Boyle, Paul Burns, Johnny Dickerson, Erin Simmons, August Burns, Angie Rinehart, Denver, Jazmyn, and Braelyn Rinehart.

This video means more to me than anyone will ever really know. I also want to say thank you to my family, friends, models, and everyone who has been supportive of my mission to connect people and bring more light to this world!

I am so grateful for EVERYONE that has made LPB possible and our Light Painting Community! Hope to see you all at the 20-year mark!
