Light Painting Tutorial – Slow Down Your Movements

May 15, 2024 by Jason D. Page

Light Painting Tutorial: The Power of Slowing Down

This is an excerpt from Light Painting Photography VLOG 60 that deserved its own post. It addresses a common question in the Light Painting community. While it’s titled a tutorial, it’s really a single powerful lesson: slowing down the movement of your light source can dramatically change the look and feel of your Light Painting Photography.

The Three Main Ingredients of Every Light Painting

  • Camera Settings – ISO, shutter speed, and aperture define how your sensor captures light.
  • Lumen Output – The brightness of the tool or light source you’re using.
  • Movement Speed – How quickly or slowly you move the light during exposure.

Changing just one of these ingredients can dramatically alter your final image. If your Light Paintings aren’t as bright as you’d like, and you’re already using your brightest light and correct camera settings, try this:

Slow down your movements! Moving your light source more slowly allows more light to be captured in each part of your image, enhancing intensity and clarity.

Light Painting Vlog 60, Jordan Lake North Carolina

May 15, 2024 by Jason D. Page

In this episode of the Light Painting Photography Vlog I stop at Poplar Point campground at Jordan Lake in North Carolina. I find a great campsite on the water and create some Light Paintings right in the back of my camp. I explore the area a little bit and show some of the spots that could be good for Light Painting Photography at night. During my Light Painting I have an interesting event happen while Light Writing my Fallen World Light Writing. My camera mysteriously falls over and then my tripod breaks, if you look closely you can see eyes looking at me in the top right corner of the frame just after the camera falls. When I wake up in the morning my campsite is trashed, it was an interesting experience to say the least. John 3:16 🙂

Light Painting VLOG 58: Solar Eclipse and Light Orbs

Light Painting Photography Vlog 58

In this episode of the Light Painting Photography VLOG, I stop at Mistletoe State Park in Georgia on my way to Duke University to give a Light Painting presentation along with a few of my fellow Light Painters. I was able to capture a few images of the solar eclipse even though I accidentally left my ND filters behind in Florida. The eclipse was at 80% where I was in Georgia. For the Light Painting part of the night, I created a few Light Orbs, Light Flowers, and some Light Writing using tools from Light Painting Brushes.
