200 Orbs – Guinness World Record in Light Painting
On July 19th, 2014, twelve light painters ventured into the Virginia countryside to attempt a Guinness World Record. The group, known as the East Coast Light Painters, united from across the United States to create 200 Light Orbs in a Single Photograph — setting the first official Light Painting World Record.
This project was led by Jason Rinehart and inspired by Andrew Wells’ “Century of Light Orbs”. Jason’s simple Facebook post in January 2014 sparked the idea. Six months later, 12 artists gathered in Floyd, Virginia, with homemade orb-making tools, determination, and a shared love for Light Painting.
Participating Artists:
- Aaron Bauer
- Christopher Renfro
- CJ Yunger
- Dennis Calvert
- Jason D. Page
- Jason L. Rinehart
- Jeremy Jackson
- Johnny A. Andrews
- Johnny Dickerson
- Laura DelPrato
- Mike Newcomer
- Ryan O’Connell
From selecting a date to building custom tools, mowing 200 individual circles into tall grass, and climbing trees to get the right angle — this record-breaking night was a true labor of love.
The Orb Makers
The team built 12 custom Orb Making Devices — a brilliant invention of LED lights, metal pipe, counterweights, and a crank handle. Special thanks to Jeremy Jackson and Chris Renfro for the build!
The Setup & Night of the Record
Flags were staked 8 feet apart in a grid across an 80’ x 160’ section of land. 200 orbs, each 7 feet wide, were spun by hand in perfect staggered formation. A 1651-second exposure at f/8, ISO100 captured the final result — an incredible display of unity, creativity, and dedication.
This record wasn’t just about numbers. It was about community, creativity, and showing the world what’s possible when passionate artists come together. 🔦
Witnesses: Special thanks to Jon Beard and Nicole Pradas for acting as official Guinness World Record witnesses.
