Wire Wool Spinning

Steel Wool Light Painting Tutorial by Nocturne

Wire Steel Wool, Light Painting Photography Tutorial

In this explosive Light Painting Photography video tutorial, Nocturne (Chris Benbow) demonstrates how to use wire wool — also known as steel wool — to create dramatic fire effects in your long exposure images. ⚡🔥

Spinning burning steel wool is a visually stunning technique, but it must be done with extreme caution. Always prioritize safety when using open flames and hot metal in your photography.

Steel Wool Tips:

  • Grade: Use fine grade 0000 steel wool for the most sparks
  • Ignition: A 9-volt battery can easily ignite the wool
  • Tool: Pack the wool into a wire whisk and attach it to a sturdy metal dog leash for spinning

Gear List:

  • Camera: Canon EOS 5D
  • Lens: Sigma 15mm Fisheye
  • Wireless Shutter Release
  • Safety Gear: Goggles + Fire Resistant Gloves (🔥 essential!)
  • Power Source: 9V Battery to ignite the steel wool

Camera Settings:

  • ISO: 500
  • Aperture: f/3.2
  • Shutter Speed: Bulb Mode – 88 seconds

⚠️ Safety Reminder: Always scout your location carefully. Avoid dry grass, flammable surroundings, and never spin steel wool near buildings, forests, or people without protection.
